Who Was Thomas Alva Edison?

I ordered this book to use as a focal point for a unit about Thomas Edison. It contains so many interesting facts about Edison, and tells his story in a kid-friendly way. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

This biography packs a lot of fascinating detail about Edison's work into an accessible format. As always with the books in this series, there is a great bibliography at the end, and I guarantee you'll want to read more when you finish the book.

Good read when I was still young and learning, and good for those still young and growing!

This book tells the true story of an intelligent, curious man who was constantly looking for new inventions. As a child he was not a scholarly student and the teacher's "put down" of Al, as he was called, made his mother furious and she confronted the teacher, and withdrew him from school and home-schooled him herself. Actually, his hearing had been affected by a case of small pox earlier. The difficult books his mother gave him to read were science, history and nature books which spurred Al to start making experiments in the basement lab he set up in the family home. Al created a newspaper called The Grand Trunk Herald,, sold subscriptions, all this was done on the three-hour journey by train from Port Huron to Detroit. When he grew to be a teenager he asked to be called Tom or Thomas. He knew Morse Code and then learned to be a telegraph operator. He invented the phonograph to play music, the electric light, the telephone, and his patents reached an incredible 1,093--more than anyone else to this day. When he invented the electric light he changed the world.

These "Who was" books are fantastic. Not only are the great for younger readers (my granddaughter is 7) but, they are full of information about the subject (in this case Edison) and she is learning about history at the same time. . She has already read several of these "Who was" books. She is improving her reading skills, enjoys learning about the person in the book and it opens the door to discuss other things (ie other inventors of the time, what life was like before Edison etc). I would highly recommend any of the "Who was" books

I give this 3 stars because it is the average. The book/content itself is great. My daughter loves this series so it gets 5 stars. However, it was advertised as new and upon arrival it clearly looked used. Don't get me wrong- it was still in good shape but the cover had significant creasing like it would from being opened and bent back several times and a clump of pages in the middle were crinkled. Maybe someone read it and returned it???My daughter was ok with this so we kept it but I just believe something should not be advertised as new if it isn't. I called Amazon and they were great and offered to send me another one IF I would return the other one at my convenience. I declined because I do not have time in the day to spend 30 minutes at the post office (which is the average wait time where I live). So, once again the book gets 5 stars. I ordered another book in this series which arrived separately. I didn't appear to be used however the cover was bent somewhat and a little crinkled. Just be weary if ordering for a gift where presentation is important.

It pick their interest. Foments a habit

Bought this book and the Ford book before we went to Edison museum in FL. It was very informative and made our visit better.

The book was a good read . My son enjoyed reading it

loved reading this to my kids. sometimes if you don't have many posiitve male role models. You can read about great men who worked hard and never gave up. Reinforces the concept that you will be happy if you love what you do.
