The Wit and Wisdom of Downton Abbey (The World of Downton Abbey)

A PRACTICAL REVIEW OF THE VALUE OF THIS BOOK. WHAT IT IS... AND WHAT IT ISN'T QUITEDESCRIPTION: I want to say up front that I love this book and very glad to own it. It is pretty much what I expected and I am not disappointed. I also want to be fair to future purchasers and explain what this book is, and what it isn't quite. The small publication (just under 7 1/2" tall and under 1/2" thick) is a treasure trove of great lines from the movie. There are wonderful lines from all seasons and you can imagine Violet features strongly as she has so many tremendous lines. There are also lines of wisdom as the title describes. But I would suggest the focus of this small book is also like a remembrance of great scenes. Rather than simple one liners from different characters, we get sections of lines from the script where characters interact. Not every entry is particularly prescient or witty, but it does refer us to a wonderful moment or scene. In such a small book, you may not find every single favorite line you expected to be there. But it is still a wonderful keepsake. Among the pages of lines and witticisms are also a few nice photos with more captions. I have included some photos of my own of the book that gives you examples of what to expect.SOME OBSERVATIONS: I don't want this to be a "cons" paragraph because I do love the book. But I do want to give just a few of those observations so prospective buyers know what to expect and expectations can be tempered. We all know this is what some might call "cash grab". But I am not going to call that a negative and the book will contain much of what you expect. That's what is important in the end. It's an inexpensive book if you get the right price (it cost me under $10). As I said, it's a terrific keepsake and the content is worthy. But for the price you shouldn't expect a flashy book. The cover is very no frills and the photos are nice, but not glitzy like a large photo book. If I were to do anything differently, it would only be this: I like the witticisms the most so I would have put even more emphasis on that. I think they also could have done a really classy cover that would exude the opulence of the former age. But to be fair, that would be a much more expensive book and might put some buyers off. I would describe this book as built for enjoyment rather than display, and that is a worthy goal for producing it. I did notice the original retail sticker from publisher leaves a mark on the back no matter what I did.If you love the show and treasure many of the one liners or interaction that make it so memorable, this is a worthy and normally very inexpensive way to relive a bit of those feelings from time to time. Since each entry is very small, you can sit back and enjoy it for just a few moments each time if that's all you wish. I highly recommend it.

Presented in hardcover and bound to last, this is a delightful little book that is sure to replace Roget's in the Downton Abbey fan's house.I appreciate this book because the dialogue of the show is very British, and therefore the phrasing tends to the complex. There's also a dry, almost cynical wit to the show that rewards the careful viewer (and listener). Because of these factors, seeing the words in print enables me to call back to the episode and think about what was going on at the time of the quote. It's a fun, and I daresay intimate way to appreciate the quotes in this book. It almost makes me feel as though the character and I have a shared memory. Silly, I know, because it's just a TV show...but it's an engrossing and well done TV show.Anyway, enough gushing. For the Downton fan this is a good add to the library. I like it a lot.

This little book has some priceless quotes from Downton Abbey and absolutely gorgeous photos from the show to help remind you of the wonderful show. Printed on high quality glossy paper. Perfect for that friend or family member who loved the show as much as you did. Highly recommend

I have throughly enjoyed reading the written words all of the wonderful characters spoke.And to the wonderful cast of characters, thank you for sharing your brilliant artistic talents with the world.As I read each bit of wit, I found myself seeing the characters as they spoke. Even the inflections in their voices came through.This is a little book I can carry with me, to open whenever I need a pick me up, or while waiting to be called for an appointment.I think this is a book I could give to anyone, and feel they would enjoy the wit, no matter whether they had been a follower of Downton Abbey or not.Thank you again for sharing your talents with me.Janice

WHY, WHY, WHY??? This is a beautiful little book; exactly what I'd expected. So I tear open the box and what do I see but a sticker on the back...not only a sticker but the kind of sticker that leaves behind a sticky goo. Normally I would use Goo-b-gone but you cannot use that on a fabric cover. So I'm back to WHY would anyone put a sticker on a fabric cover... or any at all? I'm sure the book is worth the $10 but if I'd wanted to give it for a gift, I wouldn't be able to. If I'd seen it in the store, I'd've checked first to see if the sticker came off...and would not have purchased if I knew it left the back cover all messy. Anyone know how to remove goo from fabric? (All this is the reason for my 4- instead of 5-star rating... which you can't tell until you read my rant!) ...later that day: tried to remove aforementioned "goo" and realized that the cover is not fabric but a fabric-like paper... which was also removed when I tried to remove the gunk. So this is more a warning than a rating: leave the sticker on the book!

Given as Christmas gift and recipient loved it...great humor. Only the seller/price/info sticker on back had been on the back cover for some while or in warm conditions(?) and when attempting to slowly remove it it left a fade mark and removed some of the cloth cover binding. Seller or supplier or BOTH need to be aware and not apply stickers not needed via Amazon versus stores, this was not liked by me, a collector of books, but recipient was not concerned. Just too late to return for a replacement at the holidays. Recommend the book strongly, however, a lot of fun.

This book is amazing, as I am a huge fan and know almost all the quotes by heart! For me it was worth every penny. Some people complained about quotes being out of context, and for me, having watched it as much as I have, it was not an issue, however if you are more of a casual fan then this may be a problem. If you are new to buying Downton Abbey books I might suggest purchasing a different one first, but if you’ve had the other ones then this is definitely a cute addition to your collection!

It's a great collection of great quotes. A must read, a ready reckoner, something that could make you laugh, cry and nostalgic about the brilliant show.
