Came in handy while traveling to the Azores. There is probably more in there than you need as most people understood enough English for me to get by. The only issue with it is that the pronunciations were a little off and we got corrected on a couple words here and there. The locals didn't mind helping us out to learn the language. The guide also has some helpful tips and advice throughout. Definitely look through it ahead of time, not just when in a pinch.

Super easy to use!
This was the only book I really needed when I visited the azores. It was easy to jump around and find what I was looking for, and the few people who I used it in front of really appreciated my efforts. I was particularly fond of the "Words to listen or watch for" features. It is broken up nicely for different types of conversation and packs a lot of content into small spaces, which makes it much easier to use. Not as big on cultural content, but that makes sense because it could be applied to some very different cultures (portugal versus brazil).

My criticism is that I think the phonetic spellings of the Portuguese words are a bit confusing to me. I have many other language books and the phonetic spellings seem to be more understandable.

Very convenient and helpful.
This is a very handy book for European Portuguese. I have used other Lonely Planet small phrasebooks for France and Italy and found them very helpful as well as very convenient due to their size. I have ordered several of these to use as a gift for guests who will be attending a family wedding in Portugal.

Perfectly sized little travel book! Handy and super easy to use. It arrived just in time for our trip to Porto. Would definitely order similar books like this in the future.

Great little book
Not only does this book give the pronunciation of every Portuguese word and sentence listed in a format that any English speaker can reasonably duplicate, the scope of the book seems to cover just about any topic one can think of. It also covers Portuguese cuisine, and contains a Portuguese-English, and English-Portuguese dictionary section in the back. Thorough, well-prepared and informative, it's small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag.

Suggestions.
Liked because compact, also handy phrase translation. In Portugal phonetics important ie : place names like Lagos pronounced "Larrgosh" would be helpful. For a person new to Portugal it would be helpful to have word translations in the dictionary that you find on bus and train tickets . . A section in the handbook with photos and word translation for these (bus, train/metro Etc) would make for less confusion - you might like to consider adding this for other handbooks for foreign countries as well. Many thanks.

Comprehensive
I think if you worked your way slowly through this book and managed to practise a bit with a native, then you could actually speake semi fluent Portuguese. A very handy little book. Quite involved. I managed hotel reservations, taxis, shops and cafes.

Back to Berlitz
Took this on holiday to Portugal, thinking it had lots of phrases and would be helpful.Perhaps it's because I grew up on Berlitz phrasebooks? But I found it really un-intuitive and difficult to navigate when the time required ie) basic phrases were hard to find and key-words seemed to be missing from the dictionary.

Covers pretty much everything you need for a holiday
Was surprised by how much this little handy book covered for the modern tourist. Very practical and easy to use and shows how to pronounce everything. Refreshingly subjects included (straight/gay) romance, vocab for the disabled and a menu decoder as well as all the usual areas.

perfect guide for a short trip.
This guide tells you everything you need to know without the depth of bigger guides. Its ok for a short trip if you complement the information with some online reading. I like to travel with these small guides because that way I don't have to carry something heavy.
