For the pictures: The best art book I own.
It has taken me ten years to get enough nerve to buy a book like this of Rembrandt’s. When I was in art school a guy I shared an art studio with had this book and would not return it to the library so I could check it out for myself. So I was always over on his side looking at it.When I look at a picture of a painting I want to see up close what the brushwork looks like and have it as reference when I don’t want to go a museum because of time or money. And when I’m at a museum I’m one of those annoying jerks who spends a LONG time looking at it to see how it’s made. So I bought this book for the detail plates, not the reading material. Sorry Historians. When it comes to biography or history, I’ll be honest: I listen to a lot of books when I’m in the studio. I’d do that if I wanted to know more about the artist because I can’t think of anything more frustrating than learning about an artist while not being in the act of making art. That being said all these books—especially for this price—should come standard with audible/etc narration. Imagine perusing these pictures when streaming the words too. That would be amazing. Half the time the words are referencing a picture not on the same page anyway. So, the close up plates are amazing—incredibly useful. And if you’re going to have any well made book it should be Rembrandt—if you like portraiture that is. HOWEVER…I did NOT pay the current asking price of $200. That’s insane.I think there should be a charity made up for any serious artist (new or old) who wants this book but can’t afford it because s/he will never make what his/her investors will off his/her art. It being on some historian’s shelf or unappreciative show-off’s coffee table is a travesty. It needs to be available for impoverished artists as well—beautifiers of this world, to keep in their studios with regrettable-but-inspired oil paint smudges on the pages they reference the most. But, if you buy this book and you make art, and you have any muse-worthy prowess at all at it, you won’t regret it.

Amazing book and a Treasure
I’ve been looking at purchasing this book for awhile. I first saw it at a bookstore in Lima, Peru I frequent when I go there. I would look at it on this site and the price and didn’t pull the trigger but I finally did and this book is a dream. The book is huge and the images are the most clear and beautiful I’ve seen in an art book. The painting reproductions are amazing and from what I read so far it seems greatly researched. I went to Amsterdam this year and saw many famous Rembrandt’s in person but also his paintings in the natiibsl gallery. If you can afford it and a Rembrandt fan this is a must buy.

A Must Have
This is my 7th Taschen book and it is absolutely breathtaking! It’s truly a treat to see what Rembrandt was doing at even the young age of 20. I also own the Caravaggio and Raphael Taschen books and this one has highly exceeded my expectations after only reaching page 28! I’m so happy to have this a highly recommend it for anyone’s collection. These Taschen books are very well done.

Huge huge beautiful book
This book is huge! This was a birthday gift and what a gift it is. I can barely lift it, it feels like leafing through a wizard tome. The pages a thick and heavy and the reproductions are absolutely beautiful, this book is obviously very lovingly put together. I plan to paint many masterstudies from this book, there's just so much material in here to unpack and explore. My only complaint is that I wish the images were even bigger, there is no need to have a 2-3 inch border around them :) There is also 72 blank pages, yes I actually sat there and counted them. Taschen, if you ever decide to re-release this book please consider adding even more closeups, ideally one per painting, please! I'd buy this again in a heartbeat.

Amazing
Everyone overuses the word "amazing" so it has somewhat lost its true meaning; however, this book really is amazing. I own quite a number of Taschen XXL art books and this one was just published in 2019. I ordered it about six months ago and it arrived today. What a nice surprise. As with all Taschen books it is of superb quality. The photographs are impeccable and text is very well done. It is quality throughout. If you are an art lover, this is definitely one for your collection. If you know someone who is an art lover, this book would be a perfect gift. It is the type of book that you will enjoy for a lifetime, and one that will be passed down through the generations.
