UCEC USB 2.0 Video Capture Card Device, VHS VCR TV to DVD Converter for Mac OS X PC Windows 7 8 10 11

I have a medium knowledge of tech and try to keep up with the latest basic knowledge of DIY and devices. I usually google or YouTube vital things. I was a little apprehensive about this device when I saw the ratings and reviews in comparison to some of the higher priced and largely rated brands. Let me say this was a great choice for me. The price was affordable. The packaging, and device did not appear cheap. Everything I needed was in the box. Let me note: There is a CD that comes with this product that intended for Windows users. At first glance one might think the included disc contains installment for Mac OS and WIN. It does not. Only WIN, however the manuals and guides are viewable for ALL USERS. With that said, I am using a MacBook Pro 2021 M1 and all I needed was the Converter, Cables and Quicktime. Follow the instructions to connect to my old JVC Mini DV and it was easy peasy. You can use other software for editing such as Final Cut. I just wanted to preserve old home videos before the tapes became damaged and not viewable. I'm glad I made this purchase and would recommend this for anyone with minor knowledge. It's all in layman's terms, nothing too technical or takes you through too many steps. One important thing to note. If you don't already own a USB to C , get one. It will come in handy you will also need it for newer models of computers with ONLY C type ports. It's good to have as well as C-type to C dongles.

For $20 this is pretty amazing. Just plug it into your VCR and computer. Run the software and it will produce a 720P mpg file you can edit and enhance using the provided software or your own. Simple to use, great results. Easy way to save your old VCR tapes as digital files.

I’m amazed that it can do for $30 what I paid thousands of dollars for twenty years ago. That said, it has been inconsistent.I have been digitizing VHS tapes and some DVD media. On a few occasions I noticed the color was as if it were overexposed, but this was only twice out of about 40 rips. Re-ripping the same tape after a power cycle it came out better. Another two times the video has stutter. Same solution, do it over.About 35 out of 40 rips have a video/audio sync issue. Some glitch will occur that causes a 5-15 frame lag in the video, which I have to fix manually in my video editing app. If the rip were 30 minutes or shorter it might never happen, but since mine are 2-4 hours long they almost always happen and sometimes multiple times.Anyway what I saved in product cost I’m losing in manual effort since it takes me about an hour of effort on each rip. Fortunately I only have ten more tapes so I can just fight through it.

Don't buy this. It works terrible. I installed it on my Dell laptop and it worked for the first two or three tapes. Then the audio became unusable due to some kind of noise suppression, popping and intermittent audio. So I installed it on my old laptop (also a Dell) and the preview video function would stop working after the first or second recording. It would still record but I couldn't see the video source. It had switched to my laptop camera. Then I tried loading it on my tower computer and it wouldn't work at all. When it was running it would not allow you to name or delete files from within the program. You can make adjustments to the video but not while it is in the record mode. If you accidentally choose "OSB Camera" as the video source, (I don't have one) it will lock the software at startup. That setting is retained even after uninstall. I found that when I uninstalled the software it left about 20 entries in the registry. I returned it after two days of frustration and only about an hour of actual recording. Further online research showed this is common problems for other users as well. I could never get the included OSB Studio software to work either.

So far I have transferred 2 videos from VHS to digital. The video quality is not as good as I expected but I believe it may be the VHS tapes or a dirty head on the VCR. I will investigate further when the opportunity permits. I also noticed that the second video I made appeared to be out of sync. The audio did not match the video. It seemed to clear up after a few minutes because further into the video it was in sync. Overall it is a very good device.

I wanted to give this product 5 stars for the quality of the device itself and how easy it is to use. But the converted video is not great. I don't blame the device for this. From my extensive experience with shooting videos of school and community theater events, I know that converting analog video to digital is a technical challenge, and always "lossy," as we say. So we shouldn't expect too much from a $25 device.My standard of comparison for video quality is to play a VHS cassette from the VHS player directly into my 56" Sony flat screen TV. That's as good as it's every going to get.When I play the cassette from the VHS player through this UCEC capture device into my MSI Stealth GS77 laptop computer, the converted video usable and watchable, but not nearly as good as playing into the TV. And the results are exactly the same whether I capture it with the provided Honestech software, or the provided OBS Studio software, or VLC Media Player, or my Movavi Video Editor,So, I have to give the product only three stars, because the advertising implies that the conversion will lossless.If you just want to preserve the content of VHS videos, and some degradation is acceptable, this is a great product for the money. Once it's converted you can make as many copies as you want, and even copies of copies, without further degradation.
