Excellent Fertilizer
Wow! I wish I had a before and after picture but before applying this fertilizer, I had a lot of bare spots and my Bermuda grass was very thin. It’s still not perfect, but this fertilizer has definitely helped give those necessary nutrients my lawn needed. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine. For background, I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth (North Texas) area and I have Bermuda grass. Yes it is on the pricier side, but it’s been worth it for myself as I have a smaller yard (roughly 1500 sq. ft)

This is ONE part of a process. Caution required.
Here’s the truth behind this product: It works however it does not work on turf that requires higher doses of nitrogen. If you have tifway 419, Zoysia, or standard bermuda, it’s going to give you the humic, the phosphorus and Potassium that help your turf utilize the nitrogen to be healthy at a much faster rate. The nitrogen is what is lacking. Tifway 419 requires a much higher dose of nitrogen than this product provides. Given that the nutrients make it easier for the grass to use nitrogen for growth and color, the fact that most turf types need more nitrogen is where one can find fault here.4-1-2 is great for St. Augustine. Tifway 419 needs 8-1-2. Sometimes 3-4-2. Same with Zoysia.I’ve been growing tif 419 13 years. I’ve been through ups and downs with it. I’ve figured out the cocktails to making it look plush and thick like a carpet at a taller height than recommended. I always experiment on my turf out of curiosity.I spread 5 bags over 40,000 sq ft because of the high nitrogen requirements for my turf. In some areas, I went lighter. Where I spread it at 4, as recommended, greening lasted 2.5 weeks. Where I spread it at 2, greening lasted 1 week. Then it went dormant because there was zero nitrogen in the soil. Some potash and phosphorous were left as expected however there was zero nitrogen. Zero. Nitrogen is necessary to produce green growth. Without it, your turf will stunt and go dormant to protect itself. If this happens to you, don’t stop watering. Your turf should come back but you may want to go buy nitrogen 26-0-0. Give your turf a good pass of no more than 2-3 in your broadcaster so that you can supplement the nitrogen take up.The product works yet it is lacking where it compensates for the nitrogen uptake via the correct p&k in the mix. Humic is great to retain moisture and reduce friction but without the correct ratio of nitrogen for the high speed health, you’ll see it go golden because it does not have nitrogen to help it stay green. If you need a good base for improving soil porosity, this is it. Just be ready to add nitrogen to your turf to help it green up and stay green. For the money spent, I think I would rather go with spraying liquid rose food on my turf again to keep it healthy and a dark green or spread 13-13-13 with a light coat of additional nitrogen.I spent $350 for 2.5 weeks of green and a dose of humic. I still need the green otherwise why water it? With zero nitrogen left, it just seems to underdeliver.Initial Spread on June 28th. Greened up July 3rd. Lite application areas went dormant July 7th. Heavy applications started showing signs of dormancy on July 15th. The package states duration of 6-8 weeks. I can see that happening if you don’t have zoysia or tif 419. Or bermuda for that matter. I can see the p&k lasting as well. Just not the nitrogen.Takeaway: Know your turf. Know if it’s a nitrogen hog. The correct balance of p&k are necessary but so is the nitrogen ratio. It’s a delicate balance.I’m going to use the last bag of nitrogen I have to green up. I’m going to use every box of 18-24-16 I have to make up for the rest of the lot. What no one tells you about golf courses is that they spread 26-0-0 every four weeks. If you want that Augusta golf course look, you can’t use 4-1-2 on nitrogen hogs. You have to strengthen the roots via P and provide adequate greening via N or you lose the turf altogether. It makes sense why they recommend other products. They’re the supplements; they just don’t say so.Read the other positive reviews and notice if they’ve bought the other products. If this is only one part of a process, the vendor should say so by stating it.Luckily, I am always hesitant when First trying out new products. I keep an eye on my turf. At the first sign of yellowing, I took samples. I’m going back to my cocktail to nurture my tif back to emerald health and I’m staying there. 40k Sq ft of turf is high maintenance. I thought this would help. It greened up another property full of st Augustine. It can’t keep up with the demands of Tif without additional nitrogen sources.Edit July 26th, 2021:I took this over to one of our properties with Saint Augustine turf. Saint Augustine is a water hog. I gave a whirlybird full of this product to my husband and asked him to spread it. One week later, the turf was a very rich dark green even though he had not watered it besides Mother Nature having provided a lite rainfall once after application. He said there had been lateral growth via the runners and that it just seemed to really perk up. He said it’s looked the absolute best since we’ve bought the house and had so much good to say about this product. He asked for more. I had two bags I had purchase and will be shipping them to that property.Because of this, my rating is going from 2 stars to 3. Saint Augustine requires lots of water. This has kept us from having to water the turf at all. It simply retains moisture to save a valuable resource while providing a rich emerald color to the Saint Augustine turf and making it much thicker.I do want to add that I recently checked the moisture on my Tif 419 turf and it seems to be retaining moisture and preventing lock-up of nutrients which is essential in San Antonio’s Hill Country. We have property that was previously ranch land. We also sit on dolomite and limestone as well as geodes so keeping the soil nutrient rich is important to us.I had already purchased Anderson’s Humi-Char and set it out. I applied sulfur -another source of nitrogen - to help green up our acreage. The original 5 bags I spread in the Tifway has helped the soil stay moist -not too wet, not dry- so that is a plus. Soil tests indicate a good amount of P&K. The nitrogen demands on the Tifway 419 are simply too high for this product ratio. This is what concerns me; This specific information is something I feel should be included. I know there isn’t a listing grand enough for all of it. I also know many don’t test the full spectrum of turf over a period of 6 weeks to report findings. I don't think this is a bad product however I feel that blanket statements are the issue. Yes, my turf was green and did well. However, not all turf is the same. Tiff requires more of one nutrient than others and that’s what all sod farms and manufacturers may want to look into - providing the nutrient requirements. This product is wonderful on Saint Augustine alone. With Tifway 419, Zoysia, and other Bermuda species, just know you will have to supplement the Nitrogen source. Test it after two weeks to keep track of that nutrient and apply the nitrogen in lite passes. The p&k will be fine. Also remember that if you apply this, you will need to cut more often. You’ll also have to water less often to avoid weed growth. This is one of the problems I saw with a test patch. Weeds love water. They will grow faster once the nitrogen runs out and moisture remains in the soil. If this happens, cut back on the water. Let Tif use the weeds as a source of nitrogen. It will do that if you water lightly and let the weeds dry out. Just be ready to water by hand to avoid overwatering via in-ground irrigation or oscillating sprinkler. Mow often and don’t bag the clippings unless you have way too many weeds and want to prevent seeding. The product works. It just doesn’t last on nitrogen hogs. Maybe with the other recommended products results would have been different however if that was the case, it was not strongly stated on the listing nor the packaging. I think my results would have been different if it was stated. You have my honest review since I enjoy knowing my turf is lush and green via soil health. Give it a shot if you think this will work for you.Either way, I wish you the best of luck with your turf!
