Perfect for the price. As good as much more expensive brands

I have tried all of them. The top priced from the top flute makers and on down. They are really no different than this one in basic design. The higher priced you go, it seems the less holes they put in them to make it easier. This will play just like the top priced ones, but this one has more notes and is a little steeper in the learning curve because of it. The only reason to go for the higher priced ones is to get a specific octave. This will build your mouth muscles and fingers for the sax or you can just use this to sound like a semi sax and have fun. It works. Once you realize how to go up and down in scale, you will be able to play most songs by ear relatively fast.Anyone that can't produce a sound is doing something wrong. You must first learn how to play through a wind instrument and develop the correct muscles in your mouth to prevent squeaks. This is true with any wind instrument. I was able to play this and after about a week, play significantly most songs by ear. Not to a professional level but to a level sufficient to know what song was being played. It's going to take a little bit of effort if you don't have the natural talent. I see a lot of people leave bad reviews because they just don't have the patience. Unless there is a crack or some physical defect preventing you to play this, then it's you and not the instrument. That may sound harsh, but its better than the other way around since you can more easily fix yourself than the instrument.

Item returned

Using the mouthpiece and reed that were provided with the instrument did not sound Good at all, might have sounded better with a good quality , a sax mouthpiece and reed but I sent it back. I did not want to spend $50 to make a $25 instrument sound better.

Mouthpiece isn’t a standard size and needs large reeds

It is not a good instrument. You have to blow hard to make sound. The package comes with a fingering chart, which many online do not. It comes with extra reeds which are rather large and I am not sure if standard ones will work. The black plastic one does not play. The ligature (which holds the reed on) is flimsy. If you play… say a clarinet and know how to make a good embouchure (mouth seal), then it plays just fine (as it comes). For those who don’t play, you have to wet or soak the wood reeds in water for a few minutes before playing (to have them make sound).I wanted to play it with a decent mouthpiece and reed and see if that was any better. I could NOT because a standard mouthpiece does not fit this mini sax. My plastic coated reeds were too thin to fit and I have not yet tried my wooden ones. I am not sure what thickness size reeds works with this mini sax.For all the above reasons I only rated it a 3.It is more of a toy than a serious instrument and it has all of the hassles of a real instrument.

Yuk

This is a horrible instrument, I play sax and this is nothing like sax, other than the reed.

not the best to just have fun

i bought this thinking it would be like a recorder with a reed, but it is very difficult to make a sound on. i understand that it is cheap, but not even a child could make a noise on this instrument haha. the holes are very weirdly placed, which makes it difficult to play, too. would not recommend to others

Quite an interesting instrument

Like many recorder players, I have this desire to play something just a little less ... flutey than a recorder. This looked like the perfect chance! A "saxophone" that is fingered like a recorder!Well, yes and no. Here are answers to the questions I couldn't find answers to before I bought this:1) What key is it in? Some ads say C, others say Bb, and they are clearly talking about the same device. My guitar tuner says it's Db.2) The hole spacings look strange. IS it fingered like a recorder? Very much NO. There are eight holes on the top side of the instrument and two on the bottom. These correspond to five fingers on the left and five on the right (six on the right if you count the little hole that lets you sharp the bottom note). So finally your left little finger gets in on the action. But what's very much different is that the thumb holes are NOT octave holes; they are just part of the sequence like the other fingers. I haven't gotten to the point of deliberately overblowing it yet, but I can say for certain that it can be overblown to get a whole other register.3) Does it sound like a saxophone? Sort of. The videos that show people playing it tend to use a lot of reverb to help the sound. It does sound better than a crumhorn or a kazoo, though. For those wanting to transition from recorder, I can tell you that you have to actively control the intonation, since you can bend the notes quite a bit with embrochure (fancy word - lower lip pressure is what I mean).4) How hard is it to learn to play? I spent half an hour trying to make a sound with it, with zero results, so I watched a couple of "first saxophone lesson" YouTube videos. After that it was easy. Still not as easy as recorder, but fairly reliable. I can't really tell how much like a saxophone it is to play, having never played one, so maybe it'a actually easier than it would be for a sax player.5) What's the difference between the cane reeds and the plastic reed? The cane reeds can actually vibrate. I'm not sure why the plastic reed is even included - it can barely bend, much less vibrate. I was only able to make it squeak once. Possibly it is meant to be sanded to the player's preferences, but as it comes, it is not possible to make music with it. Note that if you want to try a real synthetic reed, that will cost you more than this instrument did.6) Is it worth it? Yes, definitely. I've never blown on a reed before, and it's already paid for itself in entertainment.

It's a fun musical instrument/toy

It is what it is and priced right. Looking to see if you can start playing a reed instrument but don't wanna start with a at minimum few hundred dollar saxophone or clarinet? This is exactly what you want. With this you can learn your mouth and lip positioning and play music while at it. Is it going to sound as good or clean as a full fledged clarinet? Absolutely not but for what it is and it's price it's totally worth it.
