I want to preface this review by saying how much I really wanted to love this board. It's beautiful once it is seasoned and the size is perfect having a large area to work on, whether for prep work, dough kneading, or even carving meat. However, the production quality really soured the experience for me. Once I did have the board seasoned (and I seasoned it, both sides, multiple times over several days using Boos Mystery Oil and Wood Cream) the issues quickly became apparent. As noted in another review, the juice grooves are not sanded. This wasn't a deal-breaker for me. What was a deal-breaker is that right after the first use, the surface of the board started splintering. I was wiping off tons of fibers from the surface just drying the thing. Those fibers would have easily made it into food if I hadn't done something about it. That was annoying but I figured it was a good opportunity to get some sandpaper and smooth out the groove and edges. I sanded down the surface with 220 grit sandpaper, reseasoned it, and the same thing happened two washes later. I figured maybe I hadn't done enough, and proceed to sand and season it yet again. The board was fine for about 3 uses this time until it started to offer more splinters while being dried off. On top of that, despite having hand-dried it every time I used it, it started warping after two weeks of use. The board will not sit flush with my counter and rocks while it is being used. I initiated a return thinking I had just received a bad sample. It happens, right? I can't fault the company for a bad unit, it's the nature of production. The second board I received was shipped alone in a box with some packing paper on one side of the box (whereas the first was shipped within its own Virginia Boys box and had some paperwork). Right as I took off the wrapping, I immediately noticed several gouges on the board and a crack running over an inch on the bottom. Like I said before, I really wanted to love this board and I was excited to have it in my kitchen. However, the following weeks of use and inconsistency in quality across the boards were major letdowns. Maybe I'm unlucky and got two bad examples, but I am disappointed, to say the least.

I bought this cutting board as I was in desperate need of a large board (bigger than standard size) that could accommodate full packer briskets and spatchcocked turkeys or chickens. Apart from the size (24x18x1) I wanted a board that was made in the U.S.A., was produced from high quality materials and was easy to maintain. Well, Virginia Boys Kitchens - Made in USA - Extra Large Walnut Wood Cutting Board hit all the squares. I love the juice track on one side but if you flip, you get the full board surface minus the juice track - exactly what I want! This now becomes an awesome serving platter or even a charcuterie server. The Dark Walnut is absolutely gorgeous and when treated with the VBK oil & wax kit the colors really pop! I highly suggest you go with the bundle that includes the natural oil and bees wax combo - well worth it and will last quite a while. Honestly, I think this cutting board will be in my family long after I'm gone (my kids will have to fight over the spoils LOL). Excellent product! I look forward to checking out some of their other products real soon.

Update - I'm leaving my initial review below, but a few months ago VBK support had reached out to me after I had submitted a help request and they have replaced the cutting board and I haven't had a problem since. It will require some more effort to condition the board since it's not as dense or naturally oily like teak, but once it has been well seasoned, it'll be just like any other wood cutting board in the pantry needing occasional conditioning. The replacement board had a finer finish so I didn't have to do any sanding on any of the edges, glad to see they're improving their production. Support was also very engaged and made sure I was taken care of. I'll gladly be purchasing from them again. --- Initial review - I was looking for a board that was produced domestically and I thought I had found the answer. The dimensions were perfect and it seemed like it was a decently crafted piece. Parts of the board seemed a little less finished, the juice channel and one outer edge was rough and needed to be sanded down with a higher grit sandpaper. The initial 7 day oil priming wasn't ideal but also not a big deal. But after a little over a month of use, I noticed it started to slide on the countertop. Looking closely, it was starting to warp. It had never sat in water, or had ever been submerged. I conditioned the board with their branded oil weekly and a few days later it just completely warped, twisted so that only 2 opposite corners would touch the counter top. Absolutely floored that something this expensive couldn't even make through a year. I have inexpensive box store boards that I've had for nearly 2 decades without needing anything more than maybe an annual oil conditioning. Really wanted to support something that is American made, and I still will, just not VBK products.

I do not normally provide reviews however I feel this board and the customer service of Virginia Boys Kitchens is deserving of one. This review is on the XL board. The board is BIG and almost too gorgeous to cut on. I specifically needed a large board as I smoke a lot of large cuts of meat and got tired of meats and juices running off the sides of our smaller boards. The XL fixed that. However, don’t expect it to fit neatly or permanently on a normal sized counter or be easily washed in a normal sized double kitchen sink. Once the board arrived, I spent about a week applying and reapplying oil and then eventually waxed it using the VBK oil and wax. At that point, the board was perfectly flat. My first use of it was to carve a smoked full brisket and immediately after carving, washed the board, without submersing, and dried the board, let it fully dry and then applied oil the next morning. Unfortunately, the board warped. Being such a big piece of wood, I was not overly surprised by the warping but was disappointed, especially with the price paid. My email to the company was quickly answered with the statement that no amount of warping is acceptable in their opinion and they would gladly replace, or if I was up to working on the board for a while, they provided some suggestions that might help it get flat again. Being one to enjoy a challenge, I spent 3 weeks oiling and clamping to a slab of granite, and while it improved, in the end, the warp was still such that the board would easily spin or move on the countertop. A note back to VBK was very quickly responded to with an appreciation for my efforts and the commitment to replacement of the board. Three days later I received a replacement board. No hassle of sending the warped board back. No reluctance to replace the board. No hoops to jump through. Just absolute incredible customer service. The new board is gorgeous and “flat as a board.” 😊 Hats off to Brian and his team at VBK. Great board and even better customer service.

Bretter aus amerikanischen Walnußholz in dieser Größe sind nie billig. Dieses ist vom Preis durchaus im niedrigeren Bereich angesiedelt. Die Verarbeitung ist perfekt, beide Seiten sind einwandfrei geschliffen, die Saftrille ist sauber gefräst. Das Brett kommt übrigens -auch laut Beschreibung- vorbehandelt, laut Beipackzettel mit Kokosöl. Ich bevorzuge Leinöl, da dieses aushärtet, das Brett habe ich daher direkt nochmal nachbehandelt. Einen Geruch nach Essig, wie viele hier schreiben, hat mein Brett nicht. Natürlich ist es nicht geruchsneutral, es riecht halt nach Holz! :-) Amerikanisches Walnußholz hat übrigens einen ähnlichen Härtegrad wie Kirschholz (Brinell ca. 2,9) und ist somit deutlich weicher als Bambus, Eiche, Akazie oder Buche. Perfekt zum messerschonenden Schneiden! Sicher wird man auf Dauer Schnitte sehen können, aber es ist ja auch ein Arbeitsgerät und kein Wohnzimmertisch! Wer -wie ich- Spaß an schönen Küchenutensilien hat wird am diesem Brett sicher seine Freude haben. Kaufempfehlung!

Tagliere robusto, spesso e bellissimo oggetto di arredamento. Ottimo sia per tagliare che per servire i formaggi da tagliare al momento della cena. Arrivato non trattato e per mantenere inalterate le sue proprietà nel tempo, sarebbe il caso di trattarlo e manutenzionarlo costantemente trattandosi di un materiale vivo quale il legno. È composto infatti da legno massello listellare assemblato. Molto soddisfatta dell’acquisto, è piaciuto molto anche ai miei amici che lo hanno usato per assaggiare dell’ottimo formaggio al vino.

This cutting board is great! It arrived only a few days ago and I love using it for all my veggies and breads. The groove around the edge of the board is pretty helpful for juicy fruits like watermelon. I think this cutting board is a great addition my kitchen and is beautiful enough to use as a serving dish for cheeses.
