Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Bringing you a review for Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End blu-ray/dvd package, recently I did one for the second film Dead Man's Chest, which as I said in that review, it was amazing and worthy sequel to the Pirates of the Caribbean series. This one, being the third installment, I have to say is also excellent, I would have to say right after the Curse of the Black Pearl, it is the fourth best in the series right before the fifth film that recently came out, that happens to be my last favorite of them all, though don't expect a review from me for that, because I have no plans to buy it cuz I'm not exactly a fan of that film. The plot is really hectic and requires audience members to pay extra close attention if they wish to follow what is going on. A basic summary of the film: Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), and the rest of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)'s crew with the aid of the recently resurrected Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) take a venture to Davy Jones' Locker after passing through Singapore and traveling to the World's End, basically the entrance to the land of the dead to rescue the fallen Captain Sparrow after his grim fate by the Kraken. Each has their own reason for doing so: Barbossa wants Jack back to assemble the legendary Bretheren Court of Pirate Lords with him, Will desires the Black Pearl to free his father Bootstrap Bill from the Dutchman's curse, and Elizabeth couldn't live with herself after she let Jack die at the end of the 2nd film. Afterwards, they all assemble with all the Pirate Lords throughout the sea to determine the fate of all pirates as the new threat of the East India Trading Company, who are in possession of the heart of Davy Jones therefore have control over Jones himself, seek to end Piracy once and for all. Pirates 3 is a worthy sequel to Dead Man's Chest in in of itself, that is if you don't let the film's habit of throwing in random plot point after the other bother you. Yes, apparently Jack Sparrow and Barbossa are Pirate Lords? Yeah there's a Bretheren Court of pirates apparently. The one scene in the film that is the silliest and most random part is the releasing of the sea goddess Calypso, who is revealed to be Tia Dalma, who is also the lover of Davy Jones. That scene is always weird to see, the way they did it was interesting but silly too. Throughout the film, there are constant deals happening from all sides, betrayals, and it's enough to make somebody wonder is there no end to the conflict. It can really be a tiring process to sit through. However, the film, just like the rest of them, is still an awesome, fun, swashbuckling adventure with many great action sequences. The highlight has got to be the epic maelstrom final battle with the Black Pearl vs. The Flying Dutchman, the crews of the Pearl and the Dutchman fighting agaisnt one another, Barbossa cackling for his own pleasure at the helm as the battle rages on, Will and Eliabeth of course getting married during the war, which is sweet but unrealistic as it happens. Jack's fight with Davy Jones is a phenomanal duel and final confrontation. The humor is always great and the characters are fun to watch over and over again, particularly all the scenes with Sparrow and Barbossa bickering with one another are the BEST. LET'S face it, those two are the faces of the series. That's all I really have to say about the film. I give it a five star rating because for what it is, it's amazing. And I'm not too difficult to please when it comes to Pirates of the Caribbean. If you're a fan of the films like me, Shere Khan, you'll enjoy it fully. If not, the minute the Locker scene with Jack Sparrow talking to hundreds of hallucinations of himself comes on, it will cause you to turn the TV off instantly. Such a great movie and somethings happened that even I couldn't perdict!

The movie itself is fantastic, but it's truly annoying that Prime doesn't show the stinger after the credits.

Excellent movie to enjoy lots of action and comedy

With every argument, one person always states a film to be a success. Naturally, the opposer would say otherwise. With the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series, that aforementioned arrangement has dominated the perceptions that we moviegoers have been forced to face in watching these films. Now, having seen all three, I can honestly say, that anyone who takes the time to critique a film should at least know that no film, even if if is a "Godfather" or "Lord of the Rings," will ever go without receiving negative criticism. "At World's End" is no exception. Needless to say that "At World's End" most definitely is not "The Godfather" or "Lord of the Rings;" however, this film does possess what the other two examples claim. It is a film that entertains, a film that captures the imagination, and a flim that once seen compels any viewer to stay and watch it again. For those looking for masterpieces, venture to your local art musuem or library, for the producers and makers of this film are not trying to create a masterpiece, but simply, they are attempting to do what all other movie production companies do, entertain the masses. This film achieves those goals. With that said, now I will address the film. The third pirates movie starts with the comical and heavy-hearted pirates we have come to love deal with the fallout of the conclusion of "Dead Man's Chest." The charismatic Captain Jack Sparrow has fallen along with his infamous vessel the Black Pearl. The new villians who are out to destroy the pirate world have gained the upper hand, and our not quite heroic heroes are left with heavy burdens to bear and new problems to solve. Tia Dalma, the seer and guide that has steered Barbossa, Will and Elizabeth on their new quest to rescue Jack, has joined the crew, taking the story in new directions along with her. A new character emerges to add depth and persona to the film, especially giving that the heroes are no longer in the Caribbean. Chow Yun-Fat, a majestic and charismatic actor in his own right, joins the cast as the venerable and treacherous Captain Sao Feng, pirate leader of Singapore. Though his part in the film is not lengthy, his character commands the presence necessary to leave a permanent impression. The other stars, Depp, Rush, Knightley, and Bloom all reprise their characters with the same vigor and intention displayed in the earlier two and don't miss a beat in carrying their characters to the final outcome of the film. However, what truly takes center stage in this film is the backstory that involves Lord Cutler Beckett and the cause for his machinations, Davy Jones and what sent him on his quest for retribution, and Tia Dalma and the true history behind her presence. Those storylines intertwined with the others create a plethora of intrigue, Q & A, and new developments that could lead to a possible fourth film. Do not let the rants of outrage, negativity and hateful reviews keep you from watching a fun film. "At World's End" simply put, is what it seems, a film of great quality and entertainment.

There's plenty of plot summaries about, so I won't repeat those. If you haven't seen the movie, and are expecting another bubbly POTC1, or romping POTC2 (which I also love) - well, all I can say is that a group of us saw this opening day, and I left the theater (as a huge POTC fan) in shock - the kind you get from a roller coaster, and go back for more (which I did for AWE). I didn't expect the director to pull out all the stops the way he did, OR to pull out the rug from any number of amusingly outraged viewers who have sputtered in fury at the way things didn't turn out the way you thought they should. It's refreshing. This film IS epic, bittersweet, funny, fine performances by a perfectly chosen cast, superb set and costume details, wonderful camera work, and one of the best-scored films I have ever seen (first movie soundtrack I ever bought). Critics have complained re the length and the plot twists - for my part I admire the way the writers drew threads from the first Pirates and wove a rich, multi-faceted story, completing storylines opened in Pirates 2. (And oh, yeah, there isn't enough Jack, but there's never enough Jack, and Davy Jones' and Elizabeth/Will's story also needs to be told). This is a movie to sink into, and re-watch many times - I hope for more POTC but I don't know how some of the scenes in this movie can be topped. The director moves from sad/tense scenes to funny with a sure touch, much like the camera moves effectively from foreground shots to back, and from grand sweeping shots to close-ups - so the film never drags, with perfectly "matching" music. As far as the DVD set, I don't know technical details but I have no complaints about the sound/picture of the DVDs, except this is a movie that demands a big screen. The bonus features are interesting and enjoyable and give some taste of the stupendous amount of work involved in creating AWE (as does watching the end credits). Disney does a fine job with its DVD menus and menu graphics - only annoying thing is a Disney DVD commercial I can't find a way to menu out of, fortunately it's short. The bloopers still make me laugh - biggest complaint is only 2 deleted scenes (and POTC fans KNOW there was more footage, it even shows up in the trailers) but I am hoping for an extended edition of AWE eventually). Finally - this movie really is a completion of Dead Man's Chest - you really need to see Pirates 2 (and preferably Pirates 1 as well) to truly enjoy At World's End.

En Blu Ray parece que todas la pelis se ven mejor. Sólo me faltaba esta tercer parte, me costo mucho conseguirla y también fue por la que pague más. Me gusto, sobre todo la imagen y que el doblaje es en español latino. Lo único que no me gusto mucho es que el Dvd es región 1

Great movie

Zum Film selber möchte ich nicht viel sagen, da sowieso jeder einen anderen Geschmack hat. Gerade bei Blu-Rays interessieren den Käufer meiner Meinung nach eher die "inneren Werte": Verpackung: Die BluRay ist ebenso wie die DVD- Version in einen schicken Pappschuber eingehüllt und macht somit einen sehr edelen Eindruck. Bild: Auf meinem 32" LCD macht die BluRay durchgehend einen soliden Eindruck. Man erkennt jede Menge Details die einem im Kino garnicht so ins Auge gefallen sind, die Farben sind schön real, nicht zu übertrieben, nicht zu blass und die Bildschärfe ist eine Ecke besser als die DVD- Version! Ton: Zum Surrround- Sound kann ich nicht viel sagen da ich nur noch über meine Kompaktanlage (also 2.0 Sound) höre. Aber was während dem Film aus den beiden Boxen rauskommt, ist echt großes Kino! Fazit: Da mir der Film daheim besser gefallen hat als im Kino hat sich der Kauf dieser Version gelohnt. Technisch würde ich dieser Version sowie bild- als auch tontechnisch 8,65 von 10 Punkten geben. Noch eine kleine Anmerkung zum Thema: "Der Kauf einer BluRay lohnt sich erst ab einem 42" Fernseher": Ich habe einen Panasonic TX 32 LX 6 F 32 TV daheim und mittlerweile 3 verschiedene Blu- Rays auf diesem gesehen. Die Qualiät steigert sich im Gegensatz zur DVD nicht gewaltig aber man kann ganz klar erkennen das alles viel kontrastreicher, farbenfroher und schärfer ist. Man muss also nicht immer einen 50"- Plasma- Fernseher haben um die Vorzüge einer BluRay auskosten zu können. ...und zur Laufzeit: Die Special DVD- Edition hat nicht wie in der Produktbeschreibung angegegeben eine Laufzeit von 169min sondern 162min. Die BluRay Version hingegen hat eine Spielfilmlänge von 168min. Das kommt durch den sogenannten Pal-Speedup. Filme laufen im Kino mit 24 Bildern pro Sekunde, auf DVD allerdings mit 25 Bildern, also leicht schneller (nämlich um 4%), daher kommt die kürzere Laufzeit auf DVD. Blu-Rays hingegen laufen mit den Original 24 Bildern pro Sekunde, daher sind die Filme auf Blu-Ray genau so lang wie im Kino. Die DVD- Fassung ist also im gegensatz zur BluRay nicht geschnitten, sondern läuft durch den sog. "Pal-Speedup" nur schneller durch.
