Great Starter Kit for Kintsugi Repair

The media could not be loaded. Wow, this is really a perfect kintsugi suit. I recently fascinated by kintsugi art and found this on Amazon. Although this is just a starter set, the finished product is almost the same as Japanese kintsugi. I really like it. Very exquisite packaging, I want to buy one for my friend who likes handmade. The tools needed to complete a kintsugi work are included in the suit. I repaired a few things. One of them was a cup that my grandfather gave me to celebrate my graduation from college. After the repair was completed, I put it on the table as craftwork, not ugly at all. In addition, it is important to mention that there are also practice cups in this set. I use kintsugi to repair the ceramic cup they provided for the first time, I did it too ugly. Fortunately, I got the skill of using kintsugi set after repairing two cups. The product provider is very thoughtful. This is the most satisfying time since I shopped on Amazon. It is really good value for money. Because of this kit, I learned kintsugi.

Everything You Need To Try Kintsugi

I order about 25 of these each year as a project for my students. Highly recommend. While it can get messy, I do suggest that students wear clothes that can get messy/dirty. Never is anything missing and all elements are always included. Highly recommend!!

There’s epoxy everywhere

The kit is exactly what it says it is. Epoxy and gold dust. And the instructions are exactly as you would expect.Which leaves just your own ability to make sure it looks how you want.Applying epoxy with miniature tongue depressors while racing against the ever decreasing clock of the drying epoxy - while your fingers are stuck together and you’re breathing in goldish dust - and with the instructions forever adhered to your beautiful broken piece, which is now somehow ruined and better at the same time… leaves this a fun product.

Heed the warnings

It works great, looks cool and is as allergenic as it says. Cover up as much skin as possible, starting from your hands and face. The thing is, even the vapors can cause rashes. So, avoid keeping it directly below you while you do your thing. Also, work in the smallest batches you can. This way there are less vapors and all. Also, never forget to ventilate the area while you're using the kit. And, if you're doing larger batches, wear a mask regardless. If you can smell it well enough to find it disgusting, you should be wearing a mask.Be safe, work with small amounts, and the 4 min it takes to harden will be perfect.

Requires patience and practices

I was thrilled to find this kit; I didn’t realize this was something you could do yourself, and I have always loved the look and sentiment behind this repair technique. However, this is NOT easy to do! I recommend A LOT of practice before you attempt to repair something meaningful. The packaging is beautiful, and the included little practice ceramics are a good idea. There are four little paper cups included to mix the epoxy. I recommend using a paper plate instead. You can mix numerous batches on one plate (the pools of glue dry up and there’s still plenty of real estate for more mixtures), and with the flat surface it’s much easier to judge the volume of epoxy coming out of the tube.Don’t use the included gloves. Your dexterity will suffer, and you need a lot of fine motor skills to do this work.In addition to the included items, you should have toothpicks, more wooden applicators (like popsicle sticks or wooden cuticle grooming sticks), tweezers, cotton swabs, makeup removal pads (or small lint-free pieces of cloth), and nail polish remover (acetone). The acetone will clean up the epoxy before it cures; it will not work on cured epoxy. I looked for other solvents that might work for cured epoxy but stopped the search when I saw “hydrochloric acid,” “scraping,” “chipping,” and “sandblasting.” You can use the acetone, swabs, and pads to clean up the golden smears you will get all over your work area, your work and yourself.A few reviewers mentioned the glue never set; I also had this problem with a few batches. It’s hard to judge the ratio of the two elements coming out of the tube—especially when you are mixing a small amount in the tiny paper cups provided. Using a paper plate instead or a cup will help you see what’s coming out of the tube. Making a larger batch of glue (even if you don’t need it) will make it less likely a slightly unequal ratio skews the result. If the glue never sets, I don’t think there’s a fix—you can wipe off the un-set glue with acetone and start over. Some reviewers remarked on the glue odor (farts, I think someone said!) but the odor was very faint. That said, you don’t need a lot of glue to bond the pieces. Once you squeeze the broken pieces together a lot of glue will ooze out at the seam. In fact, maybe too much—err on the side of using too little glue on the ceramic edges, and add more if necessary, before the glue hardens. If too much oozes out, it IS a liquid before it’s set, any may slowly drip. And, as some reviewers observed, the results can be blobby and unattractive. There doesn’t seem to be a way to control or predict the results without a lot of experience. However, I did learn that the glue does not set in five minutes per the instructions. It takes more than 10 minutes to set, and you have to firmly hold the pieces together the whole time. Also the glue at first tends to be more liquid-y and will tend to drip. I found if you wait five minutes before applying it, it is still easy to manipulate and not as drippy. It’s pasty. However, there can be stray stringy pieces of glue as you apply it, like molten pizza cheese. Look out for these and wipe stray strands of glue with a cotton swab soaked in acetone before the glue cures. Once the glue cures you it may be possible to scrape the bits off with a craft knife, but the acetone won’t work on cured glue.Lots of practice will help. The two little ceramic cups included with the kit were not enough practice for me. The cups are very thin-walled; if the piece you want to fix is thick-walled, like a coffee mug, or large, like a plate, the glue and seams will behave very differently and you will need to apply thinner/thicker amounts of epoxy. I bought mugs and plates at the Dollar Store to use for practice. I broke one Dollar Store mug by putting it in a pillow case and dropping it from about four feet high onto a concrete floor. This resulted in a few big pieces, including the detached handle, and many tiny chips and shards that were too small to glue. The shards tore the pillowcase. The second mug I tapped with a hammer and it broke into four bigger pieces and fewer chips. The glue dispenser broke after about a few uses. The glue container design is ingenious, and the cap plugs the holes and clamps down between applications so the two glue elements do not mix. However, the cap mechanism is not durable and you have to clean the goo from around the cap with toothpicks, tweezers, and cloth dipped in acetone before and after each use. The cap twisted and clamped between uses—again an ingenious design. But I needed pliers to cap and uncap it between uses and after a while the little plugs that prevent clogging snapped off and were permanently embedded in the nozzle. I had not even repaired three practice ceramic pieces, and more than half the glue remained in the tube, unusable. I bought new glue, JB Weld ClearWeld ($6.50 at Amazon, $7.99 at the local hardware store) and the JB Weld cap, plug, and clamping mechanisms were much more robust than the glue that came with the kit.The whole process was difficult and frustrating and quite fussy. After one week and practice on three mugs, one plate, three teacups, and two condiment bowls, I successfully re-assembled the meaningful broken mug that had sentimental value. It looked really good. Cost of broken mug I wanted to repair: $25. Cost of Kintsugi repair kit, Dollar Store practice pieces, torn pillow case, and replacement glue: $68. However, smashing all the crockery I bought at the Dollar Store was loads of fun.One reviewer said “buy your own luster dust and epoxy somewhere else, and watch a video teaching you how to put them together.” I agree. And, don’t try this project at all unless you have a lot of

Don't be fooled by the packaging. This is not even remotely close to true Kintsugi craft.

Order fulfillment and delivery by the seller was fine. I'm an artist and craftsman and have worked with and made repairs to art and ceramics for decades. I thought I'd try out this item advertised as one of the best available "Kintsugi" repair kits available -- they're all basically the same. All in all, don't be fooled by the packaging. This is not even remotely close to being Kintsugi craft. At best it's a pseudo glue kit that mimics the idea of Kintsugi. The epoxy once mixed begins setting very fast and becomes thick and gloppy and then sticky, so there's very little time or room for improving the initial application. True Kintsugi is a multi-step, layered process, and the glue is not raised above the object surface. This basically just looks like a bad epoxy job with gold coloring. Should have known better. Twenty bucks better spent elsewhere.

Good Starter Kit

In my opinion, this is an economical buy to see if a person likes working with the repair process. The quality of items provided are good and well organized. Note: If you haven't worked with a combo Epoxy use, then patience will be needed to learn how best to use the included dual tubes. Also, the information on the dual tubes of Epoxy is written in Japanese, so you are on your own with trying to open the container. I used a pair of scissors to clip off a portion of the tube tops. Note 2: There is a black cap to use to contain the fluids once the tubes are opened.
