great investment...great tasting water!
I have had this for almost 3 years now. I have been using it for my CPaP humidifier, but recently bought a room humidifier and now use it almost 12 times a week. I have more than gotten my money's worth. I find it takes 5 hours to run. It is easy to use. Just put in the filter and fill the tank! The residue it leaves behind is really yukky...smells awful. I was drinking that stuff? Not anymore! I even use it for my coffee. With distilled water at $1.15 a gal, this has saved me a ton of money. The filter is easy to change (although I have to look up how to do it every time) and it is easy to clean (get pure citric acid-not the stuff that is "special" for distiller cleaning). The instructions say wipe it clean after every use and use citric acid once a month. I find because of the build up of my hard water, I have to clean it with citric acid about every week. It really is not a big deal. in using the citric acid, fill it to the top with regular water, do not put the lid on, and let it boil for 15 min or so. Then let it cool down before you try to rinse it out to get it ready for use again. DO NOT TRY TO RUSH THE COOL DOWN. I tried to dump the water and fill it with cold, but ended up scalding my hand. Not fun. Lesson learned. I am sure some of you will think I am a clutz and will try it yourself, but you have been warned! Pros: saves money, easy to use, result of clean, pure water Cons: cleaning takes some time and cleaning supplies. Upshot: BUY THIS MACHINE.

Has been working well through years of heavy use
We bought this water distiller in order to get away from constantly buying distilled water in plastic bottles. We need pure distilled water for CPAP and sinus/nasal irrigations, but we've become increasingly concerned about the way plastics and microplastics are flooding our oceans, bodies, and world. Given the reasonable price of this unit, plus some of the other reviews, we expected this unit to give us a year or two of moderate use before needing to be replaced. Instead, we found ourselves using the water for more and more things, until we were running the distiller virtually daily. It has held up to that use with no problems at all, and the water from it is great. We like the distiller so much that we've since bought two more as presents. Based on another review, we did two things differently than the usual instructions: 1. We bought a timer that cuts the power after 3 1/2 hours, rather than letting the unit run empty and turn off automatically. That prevents scorching on the bottom of the water basin. 2. We don't use the little caps that go on the large metal lid for the glass water pitcher. The instructions call for having the water drip though the opening in one of those caps into the pitcher, but several reviewers complained that an air bubble got trapped in there and caused a large spill. Instead, we bought bulk activated charcoal and use that instead of the regular filters (which contain plastic). We put that in a metal tea strainer that we seat in the (open) metal lid of the water pitcher, without the cap. That way, as the water comes out of the distiller, it passes through the charcoal into the water pitcher, with a wider opening for the water but without air or bugs or anything else being able to get into the water. This gives us a completely plastic-free, sanitary approach that has never leaked. We've been very happy with this approach and love our distiller.

Great unit if your filter is sized and placed correctly!
Had one of these units that performed flawlessly until one day it started spewing steam and water with the lid lifting being the cause of the leakage. I bought another one because for what I paid for it and how much I used it every day, I felt like I had more than gotten my money's worth. I liked the first unit so much that I bought a second one. Unfortunately after 3 uses, this one started doing the same thing. After much trial and error of drying it out good, with the same results, I did other troubleshooting. Gasket was fine and there was nothing I could see that should be causing it. I went to remove the wet filter as I was going to return this one for a refund. I barely got the filter out because I had it folded over in its slot. Then it hit me this might be the problem. Too much pressure buildup by the folded filter. I unfolded it and ran a small batch of water. It performed as it should have and as it did the first few times. We then ran a full unit of water and it also ran successfully. So if anyone is having leaking water out of the top, this might be a good fix. I took away one star because I feel like the company specifying better how the filter is supposed to be placed in the slot and also the appropriate replacement filter for use in their unit might be super important based on my experiences. Sadly I may have thrown out a perfectly good unit because I did not understand how important the filter placement and type could be. If I missed this info in the instructions, I apologize to the company and will gladly revise my review. However, I did read through the instructions for the first unit I bought and did not see this information. Having had one of these before, I did not read the instructions on the second unit. I find this unit very easy to use, lightweight enough yet sturdy. The stainless is easy to clean, I use a little white vinegar in the bottom - let it sit for a short bit (hr or so) and then wash/rinse out. I like the switch that was added to turn the unit off and on. Seems to be useful instead of unplugging to turn the unit off. There's usually a good bit of burned solids in the bottom of my unit if I let it run until it turns off. I usually know when to turn off the unit by looking at the pitcher fullness, and I turn it off with about 1/2" water left in the unit which makes cleaning it easier. This machine has saved me a lot of money and has freed me from having to lug gallons of store bought distilled water. As for the flavor, I know this might seem counter productive, but I pour my distilled water from the pitcher to another (old plastic style Rubbermaid ivory colored with white lid) pitcher. I leave the lid off and the pitcher sits on the kitchen table in the sun for a day prior to using it. The flavor is great. No burned or distilled "flavor". If I hadn't had the filter issue, I would definitely have given this product 5 stars.

Works great!
This is a great product. Easy to use, easy to clean. It saves so much time and money. I don't need to keep buying plastic jugs of distilled water for our many humidifiers.

Money saver
I need distilled water for CPAP and a humidifier. Use this about twice a month and it works great every time. Using a little vinegar and hot water after each use keeps it very clean. Saves a lot of money

Defective, but also Bad Design
It came with a broken reset button. The button is in its place but out of alignment, half in half out, so it has a low probability of functioning correctly for very long. And on Amazon, the best service is at the sale. In addition, there is no timer for automatic shutoff. Thus the distiller boils dry and shuts off automatically, after the boiler over heats. I do not want this behavior. The distiller will fail prematurely by the bottom of the boiler corroding, there are already signs of this on the bottom of the boiler. I like to set the timer to leave about an inch of water in the bottom of the boiler when it shuts off. This makes it easy to clean the scale with a non-scratch pad, before the next use. I have used a distiller daily for years.

Great price, easy to use, what we needed
I didn't buy this for drinking water. I like my filtered water just find. I bought this for my humidifier, which I need for keeping my musical instruments safe in a desert climate. My husband also uses a CPAP, so we'll use it for that and anything else calling for distilled water. I got it, unpacked it, put it together easily enough, and ran my first back of water. The stainless compartment where the water is boiled, was pretty disgusting after the first run, and smelled like burned something--really strong. The company recommends throwing away the first run, which I did and did a second run. It also smelled horrible. I now have done five runs, and the smell is going away. I read that the water is safe for all uses including drinking. I also read that the charcoal filter should be well rinsed before using, that the charcoal filter itself can give a kind of toasty flavor to the water. I find the water a little bitter, but since I don't want to drink it, I don't care. I like minerals in my drinking water! Anyway, this seems to be well built. The noise level isn't that bad. I put it next to my stove. It really does heat up, which is fine in the colder weather. I may use it outdoors in the summer time :-) As for cleaning out the minerals and stuff left behind, many suggest turning it off after three hours, and say that makes clean up easier. I haven't tried that, the stuff comes off easily enough--just clean it every day.

This distiller delivers performance WAY beyond my expectations!
This distiller is perfect! I am on well water. I have a whole house water filter and a water softener. I use this to distill water that I use in my Bunn coffeemaker. Using well water has led to me having to replace the heating element twice due to calcium buildup. No more! It also has allowed me to use my humidifier, which uses heat to produce steam without cleaning it all winter long. It actually produces one tank of distilled water faster than advertised. It usually takes a few hours depending on how cool it is in the house. It is very easy to clean. I only need to clean it every few tanks of water and even then, rinsing it and pouring a little vinegar in the heating chamber for an hour or so does the trick! I LOVE this distiller! I use a Zero Water filter on top of a water cooler/heater for drinking but the Zero Water filter would take too long to filter enough water for the amount of water needed for the coffee and humidifier needs. My well water has about 142ppm in total dissolved solids. The Zero Water has, well, zero ppm until I need to replace the filters and the distilled water from this unit has from 2-4ppm. This is awesome. I highly recommend this unit. I have distilled approximately 3 gallons a day with this unit for the last 4 months. So that's around 360 gallons and it has worked perfectly! If you need pure water for any of your drinking needs or things like humidifiers, units that use steam to remove wrinkles from clothes, coffeemakers, espresso machines, or even steam engine toys, this is the unit for you!!!
