So much fun to build

The media could not be loaded. This was my first wood model. I had a great time building it. I took my time and just worked on it a few hours over multiple weekends. It was a great time killer for me. It took me longer though because I spent time staining some of the parts just to add some look to it. I enjoyed it so much I immediately bought another wood model to build. The clock is accurate. But the downside is that the wind up only lasts about 3 hours. So unfortunately you really can't use this as a clock. But it is a unique piece.

Great kit. Expect a bit of a challenge.

I gave it 5 stars because it was fun to build and looks steam punk. I don't hesitate to recommend it. The designers did a nice job with the jigs for positioning the spacer/stoppers. Almost all pieces slid out of forms without damage. A couple of small pieces lost a sliver off their edge. Now for the bad news:-- I was missing the square nut.-- The instructions could use some improvement. Not all the finished sub-groups were labeled with their "L" identifier and that lead to some mystery solving.-- The instruction identified two spacer tools: T5 and P19. The implication is that the T5 tool is on a plywood sheet near the T4 tool and therefore as thick as the plywood. Not so. Both T5 and P19 are clear plastic spacer tools. The clear plastic wasn't obvious without emptying the bag containing the axles.-- The pendulum warped after it was popped out of the plywood. It hangs up on the frame.-- It works but slows down and stops after about ten seconds. No gears are binding. The escapement seems to drag and waxing or un-waxing doesn't change the operating time.-- The clock hands don't stay positioned. They freely rotate. The yellow spacers just don't pinch hard enough.-- Piece A10 (Hour face) falls off.Work arounds:-- I substituted a spare piece of the scrap plywood for the square nut. I drilled a small hole for the adjustment knob and it worked fine.-- The sand paper works nice on a curved surface but for the flat surfaces I used an emery board.-- I used both the provided was and a birthday candle.-- I removed the pendulum, flipped it, and reinstalled it. Now it clears all other surfaces. If you have to do this then be careful with the orientation of the escapement.-- The clock hands don't get pinched hard enough so I put a small piece of plastic wrap in the hole to bind the post.-- I hold the hour face in place the same way.

Very good, but requires fastidious and detailed attention

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my father-in-law. He is a retired engineer. He is exceptionally detailed oriented, and this gift was ideal for him. He spent three whole days assembling it (condolences to his wife for those three days 😊 ). Now he proudly displays the finished, working clock as the centerpiece next to the dining room table. He has calibrated the wooden clock against his own chronometer, and as far as he can tell, it keeps accurate time down to the second. He claimed the assembly was painstaking (which is significant coming from him), but if you follow the directions very closely, and don't rush, and give it lots of time, then the result is satisfying. The only problem (4 stars instead of 5) is the assembled clockwork became slightly warped, and he had to re-align it and hold it in place with a rubber band.High recommended for someone who has the time, patience, and attention to detail.

3D Wooden Puzzle

The media could not be loaded. If you're looking for a functioning clock this probably isn't what you want. It is what it says it is, a puzzle. Mine works great but It will not run for a full day on one wind up. It is fun and challenging but as others have said, the instructions suck. It's a picture book and totally lacks any readable information. There is a stick that you use to push bushings on the shafts. It has a hole for pushing them on, a slot for adjusting them and a ruler to measure but nothing is written to tell you this. There are two blocks that you build that are used only to set the distance of the bushing from the end of the shaft but once again nothing to tell you this. It was fun to put together and I now have a very interesting dust collector but if you want it to work you'll have to take your time and pay close attention to detail and the picture which at times can be quite confusing

Wax on, wax off and working wonderfully

My 13 year old son and I built this and the build went great, took 4-5 father/son bonding hours over 2 days. It really is an amazing design and the precision of the pieces is incredible. Seems like most of the issues have been covered by other reviews which were helpful to us so I'll only cover one. We had the same problem others had where once we finished the clock it would only run for around 15 seconds. I had a feeling it had to do with the wax and turns out I was right. The directions aren't very clear on how best to apply it or how much to apply. Other reviewers talked about candle wax so we tried dipping q-tips into the pool of molten wax of a large lit candle and applying that to the pieces. As a way of applying wax it works but I wasn't sure if it was too much or too little. Once we finished the build and it was only working for 15 seconds I tried rubbing a candle on the pieces which only made things worse, maybe 5-10 seconds. So heres the solution that solved it and use it with CAUTION... while giving the pendulum a little push every time to keep the clock going there by keeping the escapement in motion, I took a long-nozzle lighter and put the flame on the waxed ends of the escapement through maybe 3 full rotations. BINGO! This thinned out the wax just right. As soon as I pulled the lighter away the clock just kept going... such a satisfying feeling. The clock now runs for about 4 hours every time. While having the flame near the gear I kept it rapidly moving around so it wouldn't stay on any one section too long and possibly cause it to light on fire or melt any of the yellow plastic stops on the metal axles. One nice side benefit of this is if you do it enough you can give the edges a cool charred look. Again, use common sense and don't burn your new clock.

Very Satisfying

This clock is extremely well engineerd and thought out. The instructions are very clear, the components are perfectly laser cut with very little to no support tags visible when punched out, and the components fit together tightly without glue. There were some fiddly procedures, but overall very satisfying to work with. Everything needed is supplied. Perhaps a pair of narrow pliers would help near final assembly where fingers are too big to negotiate installation. The clock started and ran immediately. A pleasing click during winding of the spring with the key, and a pleasing tick tock sound when running. Good for about 3 hours of run time and it keeps time at the neutral setting of the pendulum weight. Plus it looks impressive.Perhaps a little darker print on the hands and the numbers would help if one was actually interested in using this to keep time, but this is trivial.
