Yes, it runs on AA batteries and does not get hot. It will also turn itself off after a time to save battery life.

You can just start typing! It saves everything to the device. You don't need to download anything or have internet. In order to use what you've written, such as to print or share, you would need to upload it to a laptop or something using the USB cord that usually comes with it (make sure it does).

It is possible to load plain text files (no bold, italic, text sizes, or formatting of any kind) onto the Neo via USB cable using the Neo Manager software. The NEO's default limit for text files is about 25 pages per file (though this can be changed to about 50 pages per file -- again, through the Neo Manager software).
