e-Learning by Design 2nd Edition

This book is as good as everyone says it is. It is an essential reference for people who are designing e-learning and assessments.I bought the book back in early November and just opened it today. Several of the pages fell out. I didn't know if the return time had passed. Fortunately it had not.And the good news is, I processed the return today and they're already sending me a new book.Five stars. Both for the book and for the immediate, hassle-free replacement!

While this book is framed as a how-to guide for e-learning design, Horton's underlying principles for instructional design can be applied across the learning spectrum from face-to-face,to blended, to virtual classrooms, to full-scale commercial/government e-learning projects. Literally hundreds of techniques, best-practices, cautions, and ideas are described. The writing style is accessible. It is written for practical application and not in ISD (instructional systems design)-speak. The page-layout and graphics contribute to both utility and readability. The indexing and cross-referencing are well-done. Additionally, Horton is very generous with his intellectual capital and the accompanying website is a great resource.So many times, e-learning products are limited, not by cost or technology, but by our own short-sighted view of the "realm of the possible." This book has certainly expanded my horizons. It is a great desk-reference.

I bought the book for a class on how to design an e-learning course. The book is clear and helpful but it is dense. My course is only eight weeks so there is so much material to cover in such a short amount of time. Mr. Horton does breakdown the process into smaller parts. It is like e-learning design book for dummies!

This is a GREAT book full of useful information. I can't begin to express how much great info is in this book. I do agree that the Kindle makes some of the forms a bit challenging to figure out (but not impossible). Also the page number references are usually to point to items that further discuss a topic. So its not the end of the world that kindle do not have page numbers. I think it is sad that such a great book is getting low reviews because of a few kindle issues. The kindle issues do not reduce the good information provided in the book

The book is awesome. Horton does a great job of explaining concepts in practical terms, not in theoretical jargon. He also provides great visuals adn examples of the concepts he is explaining.I originally purchased this book on my Kindle, which did not work well. All those great visuals were too small to view. Since this is a book for a class and because it is one I believe I will use as a reference in the future, I ended up buying it a second time in paper form.

Keep in mind that I'm writing this review for the Kindle version, so fewer stars.Overall I found this book extremely helpful. It got down to the nuts and bolts of good elearning design without ascending to the lofty heights to which so many academic writers unfortunately feel compelled to ascend. The main drawback is when it comes to tables. The formatting on some of the tables when viewed on my Kindle Fire is very wonky and it's hard to read them. I'm actually going try it on my PC to see if they look normal. The other issue is that when the author refers to page numbers, those are useless since the Kindle doesn't use page numbers.

This book could be added to any educator's library. There are graphs throughout that would improve instruction. For example, if an objective is in "create" it lists absorb types of activities to best meet the objective. There is also a section on designing test questions. Even though E-Learning is in the title, I have suggested this book to many educators.

Bought a used book. Came in good condition, it was heftier than I thought. Even so, the book is very easy to read and full of fantastic examples that really helps the reader understand the concepts of e-Learning.
