Also great for older movies! 🍿

So first of all it’s a super easy setup but it doesn’t come with a micro usb cable which you may need depending on the length of your cabling. Just assume you’ll need one.It can be finicky with the sizing of the scan lines because those are changed based on the input resolution you use with it. In my experience it’s best to send 1080p so you can get the finest scan lines that aren’t hefty and distracting. What’s shown in my samples are 1080p and the 2nd finest ones available. The finest ones aren’t noticeable at 1080p but can be seen in 720p and lower because they get thicker. There’s 4 scan line choices from finest to thickest. But I wish they were easier to change. There’s a tiny button next to the output HDMI and it switches from the finest to thicker lines and then the side switch swaps between two sizes in the category the button is on. Not a dealbreaker but something to note. If you use this for movies then you’ll find your preference and likely leave it there anyways. The on and off switch can also be finicky where when you turn it off, the image remains dark without scan lines. Going on and off it may take a few tries and it’ll fix itself that way. You’ll want to leave it on unless it’s not in use.As you can see I was able to capture footage direct. It does remove hdcp. My capture follows the rules and I went direct from a fire stick into the scan line generator into my capture and it worked to my surprise. I want to use it for the free streaming services that have old movies so I can watch with scan lines. I tested with a PS3 and a DVD of Ronin Warriors and all worked great. Screenshots from the clips I made without editing. As for gaming it works great. No latency issues that I could detect and I play Crazy Taxi somewhat competitively and didn’t feel any added lag whatsoever. For $36 it has so many uses and is compatible with many devices although it’s no guarantee it will work with all HDMI games or players. I do have a Sony blue-ray it wouldn’t work with so keep that in mind.I wish it was cheaper but now that I’ve had so much success with various devices I see the value there. It’s worth it just for movies and is a cheap scan line option for gamers. For best results, send it 1080p.I almost forgot that there’s RGB Potentiometers to dial in each of those colors. The brighter they are the less apparent the scan lines become. It’s a nice feature to have because some cheap gaming adapters don’t display colors accurately and this can at least help fix that to some extent.Anyways, long review I hope I covered it all. Can’t speak on longevity yet but I power it off when not in use. It’s bringing new life to older movies I’ve been reluctant to watch because they don’t look right on modern displays.

Produced the lines like it should - if the picture gets cut off read my review

Product worked for the most part. You mess with the RGB and the darker you go the better you can see the lines. My only problem was the screen gets cut off on the left side. I ordered a replacement and we will see if it fixes the issue. The one picture you can see it cut off. The other picture you can see how it should be.Update: I got my replacement. I had the same issue and after some troubleshooting got it fixed. Some TVs you have to disable the overcan I think it is called, others you change the input type to direct (Roku TV). My older smart Samsung 6 series I had to change the input to PC. Now it works as it should. I deduct one star for that because it should not take a long time to have to figure out a work around and fix. It still slightly cuts off the picture but it is manageable. However, now that it is working I am happy with the product. The majoras mask pictures show two different thicknesses of the lines. This is on a 40 inch samsung UHD TV going from a retroscaler 2x to this scaline generator using SVideo cables for N64.

Fair Price, Good Performance, Effective Result, High Reccomend

Does exactly what you want it to do. The RGB knobs really add a nice touch to being able to adjust color levels. For the price, I would say you can't beat it.

Dead on Arrival

Dead on arrival, no output signal and I figure ok, maybe I’m doing something wrong. I’ve tried an assortment of different micro usb cables and HDMI cables, even different TVs and nothing. Ok, might just be poor luck. I had Amazon issue a replacement and what do you know? The second one is also dead on arrival. This device is low quality and chances of yours working when it arrives are slim. Now I have to waste my time to take both of these to the post office so they can go back to the garbage heap where they belong. Sorry, just being honest. I’m not going to try a third time, this is just ridiculous at this point.

Neo Geo Mini works great with this.

I used this with a Neo Geo Mini (Christmas Limited Edition). It really makes a difference and enhances the quality considerably. The HDMI cable alone was sufficient to power the unit which is great. I have not played enough to determine if there is a lot of latency but at least my initial impressions was that the latency was not noticeable in Metal Slug. I suspect it must add at least one frame of latency.

A fairly good and affordable scan line solution

It does exactly what you expect and works fairly well for adding scan lines to game consoles. I use it in conjunction with a video scaler that outputs 480p and my TV reads this scan line generator as 640x480. It's functionally the same resolution, but I think TVs interpret it as a PC resolution which might not work on older TVs, but I've tested it on every TV and computer monitor I have and it works perfect. The color knobs are a nice addition but I've noticed that it can effect how the scan lines look, so I think its better to adjust color directly on your TV. However a major problem with it is that whatever image processing it does produces a very noisy and brightened, somewhat washed out image, which is especially noticeable in large areas that should be black, the output from this makes it dark gray and noisy, including the black borders of the overscan area. The brightening is probably to compensate for how the image darkens overall with the scan lines, but it just doesn't do a good job. Keep in mind that the video quality also depends on your TV when you use this, my 1080p TVs don't scale the 480p signal that well and so it shows a mix of lines that are 2 pixels and 3 pixels tall. 4K TVs will most likely not have that issue, my 1440p computer monitor scales it correctly and it looks fine. The scan lines also darken the image somewhat and some cheaper TVs will wash out the image when you adjust the brightness. Clearly it's certainly not as good as all in one scalers like Retrotink or an OSSC, etc, but I think this is a good enough solution for adding scan lines to game consoles or emulator boxes or whatever else you might have while on a budget.
