Q: do i need to rinse this substrate before I add it to the tank so it doesn’t cause the water to turn black like other reviews have stated?

Hi Bailey K., What a great question. Aquarium Soil does not require cleaning before use. But it takes a while to settle and filter, and in the next few days, you will find that the water quality is better and clear. No it doesn't it help's you tank + if you have plants its beneficial for their growIt keep your ph at normal levels. Does that helps?

It is fine particulate which does turn the water black and easily stirred up, to avoid this cover it with about an inch of aquarium gravel.
